Cover Me

The first project of the series is called 'Cover Me' - The name comes from the fantasy book 'Alice in Wonderland' where Alice, the protagonist has to adjust herself (somewhat creatively) to an ever changing paradigm, where the rules never stay the same.

The premise of the project starts with 10 singer songwriters who entered - my studio on separate occasions, there I presented each of them with a few songs they did not know. The song itself had only lyrics and chords and the musicians were not allowed to listen to the original or know anything about the original.

Each musician had a few minutes to choose a song and a few more to run through it and think of a way to perform / record it.

After the quick review of the song we started recording (usually only two takes). Each version was improvised on the spot, from the strumming pattern, to the melody and structure of the song.

After the song was recorded I interviewed the musician and tried to understand what went through their mind as they were recreating the song. I then played the musician the original song to capture their reaction and then questioned them about the differences and the general experience.

The frame of my experiment is very simple, the lyrics and chords I provided to the musicians formed the boundaries of a paradigm within which they had to perform and create, anything beyond that had to happen almost instantaneously with no room for contemplation, correction or doubt. Under pressure, the musicians were forced to be creative and disregard imperfections.
